8-4-4 focused on content memorisation. CBC focuses on skill development. 8-4-4 assessed through end-of-term exams. CBC assesses through ongoing portfolios. 8-4-4 asked: what does the child know? CBC asks: what can the child do? 8-4-4 kept parents mostly at arm's length. CBC requires active parent involvement.
The simplest way to explain it to a parent: "In 8-4-4, we asked what the child knows. In CBC, we ask what the child can do."
That shift sounds simple, but it's hard for teachers, for parents, and for the whole system.
